Eise Eisinga Planetarium

In a beautiful 18th century canalside house in the small town of Franeker the world’s oldest working planetarium can be found. This rotating model of our solar system has been built between 1774 and 1781 by woolcomber Eise Eisinga.

The Planetarium was restored in 1997 by a team of specialists consisting of clockmaker Jacob ten Hoeve, restoration painter Klaes Posthuma and restoration expert Kees van der Veen, under the supervision of astronomer Hans Noordmans.

Major maintenance 2013

In january 2013 the Eise Eisinga Planetarium was again completey disassembled to undergo major maintenance. This is a very precise job and it is carried out following the guidelines written by Eisinga himself. All the gears were disassembled, checked, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted.

The maintenance was performed by the same team of specialists that carried out the 1997 restoration.
